Makeup Basics

Posted March 15, 2017 by Shanna

So many people ask me what is needed for a basic makeup look and I wish I had a one size fits all answer…but I don’t.

The answer that I give everyone is the same…whatever works for you.  You might be a mascara only kind of girl or you might need more to feel put together and ready to tackle your day.  What I can tell you is what I use for a basic, easy, go to, everyday makeup look.

Starts is foundation, though I tend to lean towards light weight, light coverage foundation on these days.  My two favorites are:

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

This is a light-medium coverage foundation that sets beautifully on the skin.  It does leave a dewy finish so I find I have to set it with a powder but when I do I get 8-10 hours of wear time with this foundation.  The best part is I can apply it with the cushion that comes with it so no need for a beauty sponge or brush!

 Urban Decay One and Done

This is a light weight foundation that acts as a primer as well.  It smooths skin while blurring imperfections.  I do set mine with a powder because it does increase the wear time I get to about 8 hours.  This one though has an SPF of 20 so if I am in and out of the sun (running errands) then my face is protected.

Some days I’ll conceal and others I don’t.  It all depends on how bad my dark circles are that day!  If I do conceal then I love…

NYX HD Hi Definition Photo Concealer

This is an amazing concealer that comes in 19 shades plus 3 color correcting shades so chances are you’ll find a color that works for you!  Plus the coverage is amazing.  I can dab a little for a light coverage or pack it on for full, either way it stays in place and looks flawless.

When I am hurrying to do my basic look the last thing I want to do is contour but I do need to warm up the face, so I reach for a bronzer.  You don’t have to be precise with a bronzer, just make sure you choose one that isn’t too orange based or dark for your skin.  I am currently loving…

Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer

This, for me, is the perfect shade that adds warmth without that oompa-loompa look.  This will work for most of you but those of you with darker skin won’t get much use out of this product.  It only comes in 2 shades (light and regular).  This is so creamy and easy to blend.  I do not use the applicator it comes with but instead a large fluffy brush to hit the perimeter of my face.

Your face isn’t complete without blush and on a day where I want simple I want it to be a color that goes with everything.  So I reach for…

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso

This is a peach blush that has golden undertones and shimmer.  This will give you a light glow that makes you look fresh and radiant.  When I use this I tend to skip highlight because it already has a fine shimmer.  I’ll also use this as an eyeshadow in the summer for an easy eye look.  Just use a to dust this over your lid and a fluffy brush to use your bronzer in the crease.  Easy eye look with two products you’re already using!

Brows are something I need to do because my are so light.  If you have darker brows you might be able to skip this step.

Anastasia Brow Definer

I know, most of my items were drug store until this point but I just can’t help it!  Not only does it come in 10 shades but the shape makes it so easy and FAST to fill in your brows.  I use the Taupe shade.  This stays in place all day…even in the hot summer months.  The spooley that is with this is amazing and blends the product perfectly.

The eyes, I already shared my secret for eyeshadow on these day.  The only other product I use is mascara.

Revlon Ultra Volume Mascara

This give just the right amount of volume and length without going over the top.  I love it for a less is more makeup day.  It comes in three shades (blackest black, black and blackened brown), I use blackest black.  This does not clump and lasts all day without flaking or smudging.  Best part is it comes off easy at the end of the night!

So there you have it, a glimpse inside what an everyday makeup look is for me.  I will top this look off with a light gloss or tinted chapstick.  If I find I need to bump it up a level a light, rose lipstick works well and adds a more finished touch to this look.

With these products I find that I can do my face in under 10 minutes.  I feel put together and ready to tackle my day.  Great thing is it’s easy to travel with, just pack a couple extra eye shadows and a black kohl liner and you are ready to go from day to night in just a couple of minutes with a few extra products.
