It’s no secret that I love makeup, but I have a confession to make: There is something that I love just as much as makeup. Yes, it’s true, my love is divided. It is something that is just as important as finding the perfect foundation, or perfecting a winged liner.
It is skin care.
In my teens and twenties, I did not think too much about it. I’d throw some moisturizer (usually Oil of Olay) on my face if it felt dry after a shower. I hardly ever removed my makeup at night and never used any kind of mask or scrub. It wasn’t until I moved into my thirties that I began to notice, on my previously wrinkle-free face, the faint hints of lines that is when I gave skin care a closer look. Now a days I am all about taking care of my skin. My weekly routine fluctuates with the season and new products I’m trying, but these are my favorite standbys that I find myself returning to again and again.
First, is makeup removal. So many women I talk to are guilty of not removing their makeup at the end of the day. I know, that used to be me too! By the time bedtime rolls around, you’re tired, spent, and just want to crawl into bed. The last thing you want to do is scrub at your face, yet that is the very thing you need to do to take care of your skin. When you don’t remove your makeup at the end of the day, not only are all those products, dirt, oil, and germs sitting on your face all night, they are also transferring to your pillowcase. That means they’re there waiting for you the next night, and the night after that, and the night after that. Now, think about all of that coming into contact with your face… AHH! Do your skin the favor of removing your makeup. These makeup remover wipes from E.L.F. Cosmetics are awesome. First, they’re inexpensive, like $3.00 inexpensive — yes please! I have sensitive skin and they don’t irritate me at all. Lastly, they remove even my most long-lasting, doesn’t budge, waterproof eye makeup. Keep them in your bathroom. Keep them by your bedside. At that price point you can stash them everywhere.
Once I’ve removed my makeup, I don’t apply too many products to my skin at night because I tend to get oily and break out. But one product I do apply every night is an eye serum. These typically are heavier and, I have found, don’t always play nice under your makeup during the day. One of the stand-out products I love is by Nerium and is called their Age Defying Eye Serum. Not only does it hydrate, but it makes those lines and wrinkles fade.
Moisturizing is key to preventing lines and allowing your skin to look healthy. The key is choosing a moisturizer that works best with your skin type. Dry skin needs a richer formula that oily skin. Aging skin could benefit from a moisturizer that has added ingredients which help reduce lines or age spots. The best product is the one that works best for you. For me, I have oily skin and enlarged pores, so I look for a product that hydrates without adding oil while minimizing my pores. The True Cream Aqua Bomb by Belief is amazing! It is a gel consistency that soaks into the skin fast without leaving any residue behind. It cools and refreshes the skin while hydrating and reducing the appearance of pores.
Moisturizing alone, however, does not make for healthy skin. You need to exfoliate the older, dry skin away so the newer, more radiant, skin underneath can be seen. Depending on the product you choose, this can be done daily or a couple of times a week. Just like with your moisturizer, the exfoliant you chose should match your skin’s needs. Derma E Microdermabrasion Exfoliant Scrub is my choice for oily skin. It is gentle enough to use several times a week, but effective in making my skin look radiant. I don’t realize how much this product does for my skin until I run out and go a week or two without it. My makeup applies easier and looks better when I’m using this product.
Lastly, is a face mask. I’m a junkie when it comes to face masks. I love them and how they make my skin look and feel. My stand out favorite is Glamglow Gravity Mud Firming Treatment. I won’t lie, this is pricey. As much as I wish I could use this weekly, my wallet says otherwise. But I try to use it a couple of times a month and, wow, when I do, my skin thanks me for it! It is a peel-off mask that smooths, firms, and tightens your skin.
These are my go-to products for skin care. As my skin ages, I am finding that investing in products that work for my skin type is needed to not only help my skin look its best, but to slow down the aging process.
